Macellaio:An Italian Meal That Feeds More Than Just Your Stomach
There are three things that define true Italian food in my eyes: exceptional ingredients, shared meals, and unforgettable connections. And sure enough, that’s exactly what I experienced when I revisited Macellaio, an exquisite Italian steakhouse in London.
Founded by renowned Italian restaurateur Roberto Costa, Macellaio isn’t just another Italian restaurant. Instead, it offers an unexpected and unique experience—one that proudly brings the rich butchery traditions of Northern Italy straight to the heart of London.
As someone who splits their time between the high skylines of London and the blue skies of Southern Italy, I know how hard it can be to find a truly authentic Italian dining experience in this city. Sure, Google will give you pages of so-called “authentic” Italian restaurants, but Macellaio stands apart—not because of pizza, pasta, or a fancy pesto, but because it celebrates Italy’s true culinary soul: high-quality ingredients, shared plates, and deep connections.
Macellaio: The Italian Butcher’s Table
In Italian, Macellaio means butcher, so I wasn’t surprised to be greeted by a display fridge full of beautifully aged meat cuts the moment I walked in.

Great Italian cooking begins with exceptional ingredients, and Macellaio delivers exactly that. Drawing from the rich butchery traditions of Northern Italy, the team takes pride in every cut and component. Founder Roberto Costa personally hand-selects each ingredient on the menu to ensure only the finest makes it to your plate.
From the buttery buffalo mozzarella and 30-month-aged Parma ham to the renowned Fassona steak, every bite is a showcase of Italian excellence.
This is my ethos when it comes to food and taking care of yourself. A great meal should do more than just satisfy your hunger—it should energise you, make you feel good, and remind you why food is one of life’s greatest joys.
Sharing Food, Sharing Love
In Italy, meals are meant to be shared—not just because it’s tradition, but because it’s good for your mind and body.
🔸 Studies show that communal meals reduce anxiety, improve mood, and create a sense of belonging.
🔸 Eating together strengthens relationships—whether with friends, family, or even new acquaintances.
🔸 Shared meals slow you down, allowing you to be present and truly savor the moment.

It’s why meals are meant to be shared, and that’s exactly how Macellaio’s menu is designed.
Every dish encourages togetherness, whether it’s tearing apart a fresh ball of mozzarella, spooning out steak tartare tableside, or passing around a perfect ribeye. Each moment is a celebration of flavour, textures, and shared experiences, making every meal a memory in the making.
Italian Hospitality: More Than Just Service
Dining in Italy is never just about food—it’s about how you’re made to feel. At Macellaio, it’s personal. Silvia, our incredible host, welcomed us warmly and guided us through the menu with thoughtful recommendations to make sure we had the best experience.
Italians take pride in making you feel special, ensuring that every meal isn’t just satisfying—it’s an experience of warmth, generosity, and connection.
The Meal: A Love Letter to Italian Ingredients
Every dish at Macellaio tells a story of love, tradition, and a deep respect for quality ingredients.
Antipasti: A Bold Beginning
The perfect start: creamy, delicate mozzarella paired with rich, silky 30-month Parma ham.

The Showstopper: Steak Tartare, Made Tableside
This was one of my favourite moments of our experience. A trolley rolls up to the table, carrying the lean, ruby-red Fassona beef.
Watching our tartare prepared in front of us was a moment of pure Italian theater. Silvia (our amazing host) chops, seasons, and folds in a symphony of ingredients with a touch of olive oil. The final mix is spooned onto the plate, topped with an egg yolk. Served with beautiful homemade crostini, the contrast of textures made it an unforgettable experience.
🍅 Paired with a bold, spicy Bloody Mary—because great food deserves a great drink.

Primo: Pasta Pomodoro with Aged Parmesan
A dish as comforting as home, with rich tomato sauce and beautifully aged Parmigiano shaved on top. A reminder of Sunday lunches in Italian homes, where simplicity and quality reign supreme.

Secondo: A Steak to Remember
The Revolver Steak – A perfectly cooked, medium-rare ribeye, served with bone marrow. Expertly sliced so that the only effort required was lifting it to my mouth—and let’s just say, I closed my eyes in pure bliss as it melted away. Served with Homemade Chips and a Chopped Tomato Salad – Fresh, vibrant, and a perfect balance to the rich ribeye.
🍷 Paired with a Glass of Nebbiolo – A classic Italian red wine, perfectly structured to stand up to the steak’s bold flavors.

Dolci: A Sweet Goodbye
The meal ended with not one, but two desserts. A golden apple tart, fruity and buttery and the flawless Tiramisu, rich and creamy.
🍷 Enjoyed with a glass of Passito, its honeyed sweet wine wrapping up the meal with perfection.
And to end? A single shot of espresso with a splash of anise liquor— A personal favourite way to end an Italian meal, and Silvia knew exactly what I wanted before I even had to ask.
